Dan Steever, President
Dan Steever became Publisher of the Colorado Springs Gazette in September 2012. Steever’s business career spans over 30 years, 20 years as an executive and general manager where he has earned a reputation for growing businesses, leadership teams, building new strategies and positively changing business trends.
Prior to joining The Gazette, Mr. Steever was CEO of PromoWorks, a nationally recognized marketing services firm serving retailers and CPG manufacturers throughout the US. Prior to joining PromoWorks, he was the President, and Owner/Partner at Marian Heath Greeting Cards, a private equity sponsored greeting card publisher which he purchased in 2002 and grew into a national brand. Earlier in his career, Mr. Steever spent eleven years in the marketing services industry, most notably as the Chief Executive Officer of Marketing Force, a leading In-Store Marketing Services firm in the mid 90’s. He also was Senior Vice President for Imagitas, Inc. a successful private equity funded marketing services firm, and Regional Vice President/General Manager of national mailer ADVO, Inc, running several operating units during his tenure. Dan also served as Group Vice President, worldwide Sales and Marketing, for Broderbund Software, a leading consumer software brand.
Dan and his wife Cathy live in Colorado Springs and have four children. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia.
Joanna Bean, Vice President
Joanna Bean has lived in Colorado since 1975 and been a journalist at The Gazette for nearly 25 years. She grew up in a southwest Denver suburb and earned a journalism degree at Colorado State University. At The Gazette, she was hired as a business reporter and has since worked as deputy features editor, business editor, a local news editor and, most recently, managing editor. She has produced dozens of award-winning stories as a writer and editor at The Gazette, including the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning “Other than Honorable” series, which appeared in The Gazette in 2013. Joanna has two daughters who are natives of Colorado Springs. Joanna enjoys skiing, hiking, camping and exploring all corners of Colorado and the West, particularly the two- lane back roads and national and state parks.
Kevin Miller, Treasurer
Kevin Miller is the vice president of financial services for The Gazette. Miller has more than 17 years of finance leadership experience. He most recently served as chief financial officer and executive vice president of online operations for Lincoln College of New England in Denver. Before Lincoln College, Miller was division CFO and vice president of online operations for Atla Colleges and vice president of finance and business operations and regional CFO for Comcast Cable. He also held several positions at AT&T.
Sara Simon, Secretary
Sara Simon is the Assistant to Dan Steever, Publisher and Brad Howard, GM/Chief Revenue Officer of The Gazette in addition to being the Advertising Administrator. Sara has been with The Gazette since October 2008 and has a significant background in advertising sales and support, and in administrative services. Sara was an integral part of The Gazette’s Volunteers in Action program and remains active with charitable organizations in our community. Sara is a voracious reader, aspiring chef, and spends her free time hiking and camping with her family, including her husband and 3 dogs.
Rudy Vasquez, Board Member
Rudy Vasquez is The Gazette’s Marketing Manager and has been with The Gazette since 2000. Rudy has held several positions with The Gazette and has worked in the Marketing Department since 2003.
Part of his duties include but are not limited to working with non-profits and other organizations in the Pikes Peak Region for sponsorship opportunities and partnerships.
Rudy was raised in a military family and born in Wiesbaden, Germany while his father was stationed overseas. Rudy’s family located to Ft. Carson for a second time in 1995 and has been in Colorado Springs ever since.
Samuil Nikolov, Board Member
Samuil Nikolov is The Gazette’s Director of Consumer Acquisition and has been with the company since September 2014. Samuil is new to Colorado, arriving in Colorado Springs in September from Atlanta, GA. Throughout his carrier, he has held several leadership marketing roles in the media industry while working for companies such as McClatchy, Morris Multimedia and Community Newspaper Holdings.
Samuil grew up in Bulgaria but he later followed his sister’s example and came to the US as a high school exchange student when he was 17. He then decided to follow his dream and get a business education in the US, attending Valdosta State University in Georgia. Samuil volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Atlanta Humane Society and served as a Georgia State Director for Southern Circulation Managers Association.
Samuil and his fiancée enjoy spending time with friends and exploring the Colorado outdoors with their two dogs.
Wayne Heilman, Board Member
Wayne Heilman has been a business writer for The Gazette since 1982. He covers aerospace, financial services, the local economy, technology and transportation. Heilman previously was a reporter for the Columbus, Neb., Telegram and is a 1979 graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia with a degree in journalism. He is a native of Chicago. Wayne, and his wife, Donna, are the parents of three grown children and have three grandchildren. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir and has participated in several musical theater productions in Colorado Springs during the past three years. He completed the American Discovery Trail Half-Marathon in September and is entered in this year’s Triple Crown of Running.
Matt Andrews, Board Member
Matt Andrews is a Front-end Developer for the Digital Development side of the IT Department. He has been on staff at the Gazette since December 2013.
Matt has experience with various non-profit organizations in the Pikes Peak Region, which include working with Urban Peak, Wild Fire Tee’s and Habitat for Humanity. He has also held training for digital marketing topics to non-profits in the past. Plus, promotion efforts and consulting for non-profits.
Matt has 13 years of experience in web design, web development and marketing. He has won various awards from American Advertising Federation – Colorado Springs, Art Directors Club of Denver and the Colorado Press Association.
